THE SHIPPING DISPUTE

It is estimated that over £1,200,000 has been lost in wages ire coueequenco of the shipping strike. The settlement which has been reached provides that no question of manning is to bo raised regarding Die ships now being put into commission immediately. The manning question will bo decided by a Manning Committee, equally representing the shipowners and the seamen. This committee will be constituted by March 1 at the latest, and its decisions will be binding on both parties. A conference on tho suggested alterations of the present general arrangement as to wages and conditions will bo held within a fortnight. The agreement is to continue in force until December 31 or until it is mutually determined. Tho recommissioning of ships will proceed a.s qnickly as possible. Arrangements are being made for Dio despatch of tho Maheno to Auckland on Monday afternoon.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
