Judge- K. M, Landis, who. some years, ago imposed the largest fin© in history, £5,800,000, on the Standard Oil Company, recently pronounced the shortest sentence of imprisonment on record. He had before him a Chicago man named Jeffe Nash on a charge of tampering with the mails. Nash had opened a letter addressed to his wife, whom he suspected of infidelity. Severely addressing the prisoner, the Judge olwerved : " The laws of the United States must (be upheld, and when you tamper with, the mails yon must suffer the consequences."
