SHORTEST SENTENCE ON RECORD
Judge- K. M, Landis, who. some years, ago imposed the largest fin© in history, £5,800,000, on the Standard Oil Company, recently pronounced the shortest sentence of imprisonment on record. He had before him a Chicago man named Jeffe Nash on a charge of tampering with the mails. Nash had opened a letter addressed to his wife, whom he suspected of infidelity. Severely addressing the prisoner, the Judge olwerved : " The laws of the United States must (be upheld, and when you tamper with, the mails yon must suffer the consequences." I sentence you to 25 seconds' imprisonment." The Judge held a stop-watch in &js hand while Nash, sat in a corner in the custody of a police officer until the seconds 'had flown and he was released,
