The safe arrival of the Interstate cargo steamer Inga at Sydney last, week from Greymouth draws attention to a fine engineering and shipwright feat that was carried out recently at Wellington. Itwill be remembsred that the Inga had her hull badlv holed through touching a rock in the Taranaki Bight while bound from Sydney to Wanganui. The vessel came on to Wellington for repairs. Her owners. R. S. Lamb and Co., Sydney, decided that the Inga should bo* temporarily patched up at Wellington and be permanently repaired in dock on arrival at Sydney. Accordingly the Inga was taken upon the Wellington patent slin and S. Wood and Son fitted a huge wooden patch on the ve.-sel's bull—the first undertaking of'its kind .performed in New Zealand. The patch measured about 45ft in length and extended from one bils;c keel to tile other, in width—about 45ft also. The timber used was totara. When the job was complete the Inga was launched and tested. She proceeded from Wellington to Greymouth and took a load of timber from the latter port saf elv to Sydney. If there had been a dock at Wellington the permanent repairs of the ship would orobnblv have been effected at that port instead of at Sydney. OIL DEPOT AT SYDNEY.
