The estate of the late Charles Garvice, novelist, is valued at £71,049. Mr John Fuller, en route for Wellington, left Dunedin by the second express to-day. Mr William Brown, whose death, at thg age of 81, occurred last Wednesday (from the combined effect of pneumonia and shock through being knocked down by a tramcar), was for many years one of Wellington's strongest chess players. Before coming to New Zealand he was a prominent member of the Bath Chess Club. He joined the Wellington Club in 1883, and played his last game at the club only three weeks ago. He took part in several New Zealand congresses; his best bid for the Dominion championship beino made at Dunedin in the 1894-5 tourney" wh-en he tied with two Barnes and K. A. Cleland—for second place. He was the solo survivor of those who took part in the second New Zealand Congress (1888-9} Messrs Hookham, Ollivier, Benbow, Mouat, and T. Sexton: having all predeceased him. Though not a prize winner on that occasion, he had tho satisfaction of defeating the then champion (Mr H. Hookham) in the final round.
