GENERAL BIRDWOOD

AT WELLINGTON. General Sir William Birdwood arrived at Wellington from iSydney last evening, accompanied by Lady Birdwood and Miss Joan 'Birdwood. An official party, including the Minister of Internal Affairs, Majorgeneral Sir E. W. C. Chaytor, and Briga-dicr-general G. S. Richardson, boarded tho Manuka in the stream from a motor launch, and extended a welcome to General Bird wood on behalf of the Government and the Defence Forces of tho Dominion. The president of tho Returned Soldiers' Association (Dr Boser) also welcomed the general on behalf of the returned men, and extended to him an invitation to attend the conference now being held in Wellington. General Birdwood makes it clear that he is paying merely a holiday visit to Now Zealand. Tie hopes to meet as many as possible of the Anzac men, but ho is not making in a sense a formal tour. A civic reception will bo accorded him this evening. WELLINGTON-, J„ ne 3. church on Monday night. He spends a fortnight in Canterbury and Otago. visitin<T Duncdin, Invercargill, and Queenstown, and returns to Christchurch. He proceeds then overland to the- West Coast, Nelson, and Blenheim, and returns to Wellington. He goes to Wairarapa and Napier, motors to Taupo, Rotorua, and then proceeds to Auckland. After a few days there ho goes; to New Plymouth, and returns to Wellington, visiting various towns en route. He leaves Wellington for England by the Arawa about July 21).
