' D.J.C. WINTER MEETING,

To-morrow is to be tho first day of the races at Wingatui, the first race timed for 11 a.m.

t The engaged did fairly fast work on the‘inside grass track this morning.

The course proper was kept closed. It is in fair order, and if wo can got the luck of a few hours’ drying weather beforehand it will furnish decent winter going.

Mr F. S. Easton, owner of Amythas, will be here to-night. He is coming to see his winter pair ? Master Strowan and Gang Atva’, win or lose as the case mav be.

There will be a big field in the Trial Hurdles. The six horses at the head of the weights have good credentials, especially Jack Symons, Golden Prince, and Tutioorn, and one of the sis may be made favorite. Cattach, Silent King, Blue Admiral, and Barley Rigs are likely to be remembered when the public are investing on the Brighton Handicap. Kilmoon is a class above all that are left in the Birthday Handicap, but he null have to bo well to beat Nigiitraider, and Jack may take some beating. Luke is regarded as a doubtful starter in the Otago Steeplechase. This race, however, is sure, to attract a large field, and tho result is very open. Coalition, blaster Strowan, Manawaponga, and Crib are good horses, and there are some sturdy second-raters- in the field, such as Zarkoma, Silverspire, and Diavolo. It should bo a pretty race. The Tradesmen’s reads like a puzzle. It is hard to say what will be favorite. Silver Peak, Mortham, nud Sleepyhead may dispute that honor. Tho Hack Steeplechase may provide a good go between Grafton Tot, Golden Rupee, and Glenisla. Gaylight, Hylans, and Wild Pilgrim have chances in tho Jumpers’ Flat Race. The Winter Welter will produce a strong field) of which Primum, Golden King, and Thistleerown are to be preferred to some others.
