TRADE WITH WANGANUI
POSITION BECOMING SERIOUS. DIRECT SERVICE REQUIRED. [Special to the • Stae.'] CHRISTCHURCH, April 22. According to a special message to the 'Sun' from Wangairai in respect to the withdrawal of the Calm froth the South Island-Wanganui trade, Mr A. 0. Bignell, chairman of the "Wanganui Harbor Board, said that the position was very unfortunate, but owing to the Railwav Department' having control of the sheds "and land it was impossible for {he Harbor Board to imnrove matters at present. The only alternative seemed to be the-building of new wharves and sheds further down the river, capable of meeting the requirements of the district. One serious aspect of the Canterbury •Steam Shipping Company's decision has already been reflected in the matter of flour shipments from Canterbury, and under present conditions it is impossible for the Wanganui master bakers to secure adequate supplies of flour from South I-.land ports. In view of the unfortunate development the bakers have asked the chamber of commerce for assistance in bringing about some scheme by which a direct service between Lvttelton and Wanganui can be maintained. It was pointed out by a deputation that the position was verv serious, so much so that none of the bakers had a week's supply of flour in store.
