The Hon. C. J. Parr, Minister of Education. was at Nr,pier yesterday afternoon. He left for the South Island this morning, and will go straight on to Balelutha. Mr R. ,G. Varcoe, editor of the ‘Cromwell Argus,’ has spent the past fortnight in Dunedin. He will return to Cromwell at the end of this week.

Morning ton loses an energetic member of the school committee in the person of Mr A. M. Sbugar, who is about to proceed to Auckland, having obtained a permanent position on the literary staff of the ‘ Herald.’

Mr J. T. Raul has joined, the literary staff of our morning contemporary. One of the most successful meetings ever held at the Wakari school took ulace on Saturday evening to discuss arrangements for the fare welling of Mls s J. 0. Christie, who retires upon superannuation after a period of 52 years’ continuous service at Wakari. Mr R. S. Brown (chairman of the school committee) presided, aud referred to Miss Christie’s long and faithful connection with tho school, during which time she had endeared herself alike to parents and children —so much so, in fact, that it was not only present residents of the district who desired to provide a fitting send-off to her, but that there were numerous ex-pupils of the school who were eager to associate themselves with tho committee set up to carry out arrangements. After discussion, it was deciowS that a social function be tendered Miss Christie early in May, and a representative general committee, with various sub-com-mittees, was formed to take the matter in hand. Mr S. A. Wood was appointed secretary and Mr W. Cubitt assistant secretary, with whom friends and ex-pupils now residing out of the district are reQiiested to get into communication. It is the intention of the present-pupils of the school to entertain Miss Christie on their own behalf

The many friends of the Rev. J. A Luxford will regret to learn that his health is in a most .unsatisfactory state (states the ‘Alanawatu Daily Times’). AD Lnxford, who lost a leg at Gallipoli while acting as chaplain with the New Zealanders, and who subsequently was a chaplain in England, returned to New Zealand recently. Mr J. A. Fraser, Assistant Land Registrar at Christchurch, is to take up the duties of District Land Registrar at Nelson. Albs Florence Eileen APMillan has been appointed second assistant Land Registrar at Christchurch.

Sir James Allen left Dunedin for Timaru by the first express to-day, and proposed to go on from Timaru to Lyttelton by the second express.

Two of the Moagiel costal officers are under orders for transfer, these being Alossrs J. T. Holt (postman) and A, J. Pringle (exchange clerk). Both these young men have received promotion to cadets, and are to leave for Ponsonby telegraphists’ gallery on Thursday next. Air Holt is a native of Dunedin, while Air Prinde’s home is at Ranfurly. They have both been oblio-ing members of the Inral post office staff, and their many friends will be pleased to hear of their well-deserved promotion.
