WORK AT RICCARTON.
[Special to tke -« Star.'] OHRISTCHURCH, March 27. At Riccarton to-day Moorfowl, alone, easily left four furlongs behind in 54sec. Counter Attack skipped over* five furlongs well in lmin 4§sec. Amythas, with the assistance of'Judea over the last five, ran seven furlongs in lmin 29sec, finishing very well. Judea was two lengths away as the post was reached. Flight Commander and Nightraider were companions over a mile, which was run in l'min 46isec, the pair finishing on terms. Royal Stag jumped off the the mile and a-quarter post, and was picked up by Macduff at the mile peg. The journey was left behind by the former in 2min 14£ sec. with Macduff two lengths away. La Paix ran half a mile in S4sec. Royal Star, jumping oft at the top of the straight, was joined by Grim Joke at the seven furlong post. They kept together till the last furlong, where <he former drew away and finished the distance in lmin 31-|sec. Reproachful, alone, ran six furlongs in lmin 18|sec, and Warlove got over a mile well in lmin 45j;sec. Onslaught and Winter Wind were together as the post was reached, after leaving five furlongs behind in lmin 2|sec. This was the best gallop of the morning. Royal Stag has come strongly into favor for the Great Autumn Handicap, and he looks like starting favorite for that race. Reports from the north state that Hector Gray has been engaged to ride Arrow-smith in the Great Easter Handicap. It is doubfful if _Kilbrogan will fulfil his Easter engagements at Riccarton. Radial, after a successful trip to Invercargill this week, returned yesterday to Oamaru. He will remain at home for a day or two, and then be brought on to Riccarton, with All Ready as a companion, to fulfil engagements at the Canterbury Jockey Club's Meeting. Golden Bubble is one of the short-priced lot for the Great Easter Handicap, but it is hard to see how ho can have much chance in view of his form at Wanganui. Though Sasanof claims no engagements to clash with the meeting at Riccarton, the Martian gelding is in very mild request with backers who aro looking for the winner of tho Great Autumn Handicap. Following on a good gallop over five furlongs this week. Fiery Cross has come into increased favor for the Great Easter Handicap. He may be hard to beat provided he remains sound. RUGBY FOOTBALL. The Alhambra Club held two very successful practices on Saturday. The following players leave for Christchurch on Friday to play the annual Easter fixture with the Merivale Club: J. Camnbell, A. Williams, J. Sim, G. Gillick, "H. Gillick, H. Thomas, W. Coombes, W. Knox, T. M'Laren, J. M'Laren. O. Fitzpatrick, T. Fitzpatrick, M. Cameron, H. M'Millan, W. Wood, F. M'llroy, M. M'Arthur, G. Aitken, G. Marston. Mr S. Larkins will travel as manager of the team. All players and members making the trip meet at railway station at 7.30 a.m. on Friday.
