WOMAN AND CHILDREN DROWNED. Loss of life and great damage are reported from the North of Auckland as a result of the heaviest floods for manv years Telegraphing last night, the Ne\v Zealand Herald's' Paparoa. correspondent stated that a, drowning disaster had occurred at the railway works on the Main Trunk line in the Upper Paparoa Valley. A worker named Mathews was camped near the river with his wife and familv ihe flood suddenly rose and swept away the camp. The wife and three of the children were drowned, but Mathews succeeded in rescuing other members of the family. Another man saved himself by a tree, and was rescued after six hours! One man is still missing. Communication with Paparoa by vehicle is practically blocked by damaged bridges and land slips. Several buildings in th* township were flooded to a depth of several, feet, and in one case the kitchen was washed out of position. Business is suspended. Enormous damage has been done to the roads and bridges. Auckland coastal shipping has had a very rough time, and many vessels are sheltering. The weather Is now fine, and it ib hoped the floods will rapidly subside
