CHARGE OF ASSAULT
POLICE SEIRGEANT INJURED. In the Magistrate's Court at Wanganui two broth ens jiamed Roy and Victor Smith were charged with assaulting Police-ser-geant James Redd with intent to do grievoiis bodily harm. In the cmiTso of hie evidence Sergeant Read stated that fat© on.''.hi night of-June 11 he proceeded to the Wanganui East Town Hall, where a Church of England dance was in progress, and on reaching the vicinity ho had occasion to remonstrate ■with two men for using bad language. Ho vrafl attacked by both men, and was severely kicked and punched. As he lay on th# ground one of the accused tried to thrdttile Mm. A bystander intervened,' and witness managed to reach his home, where he ecjlapsjxl. Witness positively identified one of his assailants. Medical evidence was- -{given that Sergeant Rcid was admitted to the -public hospital fiiifFeaiiig from concussion of the brain. J&ifjhlt days elapsed before he left tho institution, -and lie would not be able to resume police duty for several months. Both accused wore committed for trial, a-t the Supreme Court-.
