ARTIST’S DESPAIR

LIFE THAT HAD BECOME UNENDURABLE. Details of the tragic death of Mr Samuel Reid, the well-known artist and author, who committed suicide at his home, Caversham Lodge, Chorloy Wood, came to light at the inquest, telegraphs the ‘ Daily Chronicle’s’ Waterford eorrespondnt. Evidence showed that Mr Reid, for more than two years, had been Buffering from lung trouble. About a fortnight previously he threatened to shoot himself, saying: “I cannot stand much more of it.” The artist was found dead in an armchair in his study. There were two wounds in his chest, and a gun was on a chair beside him. Before going to his study ho kissed his wife. The jury returned a verdict of suicide while temporarily insane. ACADEMY EXHIBITIONS. Mr Reid, who was 65 years of age, was a member of the Royal Scottish Water Color Society, and had exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Scottish Academy, the Now Gallery, and the New English Art Club. He was a gold medallist at the Crystal Palace in 18J59. Among his published writings wore contributions to ‘Blackwood’s Magazine,’ ‘Chambers’s Journal,’ and the ‘ Oornhill Magazine.’ He was the author of several poems, and a .collection of these was published in 1832 under the title ‘Pansies and Folly Bells.’ .Mr Reid was the youngest brother of Sir George Reid, president of the Royal Scottish Academy, and was a native of Aberdeen. He was an accomplislied singer.
