THE CARRIAGE OF STOCK
HIGHER MEAT PRICES PROBABLE. RESULT OF RAILWAY RESTRICTIONS. [Special to the ‘ Star.’" CHRISTCHURCH. July 1. Tho effect of the “cut” in tho train services is likelv to be particularly serious from the point of view of the carriage of slock. The freezing work' will be absolutely cut off from supplies by' rail, and under no circumstances will store stock bo carried P’at stock will be carried to the markets, ns it is essential that butohors must obtain supplies. Exporters will, of course, be able to buy. They will have to drive their purchases to the works. In any case, however, the freezing companies are expected to dose fixe season within a fortniuht. Even tho exception made in the conveyance o* fat stock to the markets by rail does not make the position quite satisfactory from the butchers’ or fanners’ point of view ns trains only nm on certain days. In some districts ; t will be a matter of difficulty to get stock io the saleyards. Tho lack of nasture on the roads makes driving largely out of the question outride the immed’ate radius of a saleyards. In some districts it will take nearly a week to send in stock to Addington, instead of a da-v or eo, ns. was the case formerly. During this period stock would be almost without food. However, the full arrangements regarding the carriage of fat stock have not yet been announced. “ As the position is understood at present.” said on© engaged in the industry, “it is certain that the size of the yarding? ns Addington will shrink during the next few weeks, and higher prices will be paid, which will bo reflected in dearer meat to the public.”
