PORT CHALMERS COUNCIL
The- fotnightly meeting last night was attended by the Mayor Air J. M. Stevenson), Ci'S Coleman, M'Lachlan, Jones, Tait, "i.ove*. Allan, Dunn, M‘Donald, Muwscn, ond Isbister. His Worship moved that it he recorded fa the minutes of the council that the signing of peace had been celebrated ill Pert Chalmers that day. A motion of condolence to the relatives of the lato Charles Jacobson was carried, the Mayor stating that deceased was an esteemed citizen and council employee. CORRESPONDENCE, Air TV F. Martin wanted the name of the council’s delegate to the ensuing conference of the Municipal Association, for which the order paper had been prepared. —Mr Dickson, M.P., to be asked to represent the council. The Secretary of the Harbor Board wrote enclosing (resolutions passed at a recent conference in favor of direct consignment of imports to Port Chalmers or Dunedin. The council’s co-operation was asked for.—Co-operation agreed to. The Otago Motor Club wanted the council to send a representative to a forthcoming conference fox* the consideration of a report dealing with the betterment of the roads of the Dominion. The report was drafted by a committee set up by the recent conference. —Or Tait to be the council's delegate. Mr H. O. Haggitt wrote that Mrs Mackie agreed to the council’s terms for extending a water supply to the Crescent Hotel, bat she did not consider she shonl_d be charged the proposed annual fee of £5. ,—Water Committee to report. Mr D. N. Fletcher directed attention to surface water from the_ direction of the Scott monument and Williams street haying- being diverted on to two building sections, with very harmful results.—-Re-ferred to Works Committee. Messrs J. Newland, H. Asher, and W. Jones wrote painting out that improvements were badly needed in Meridian street.—Works Committee to act. Mr W. G. Love wanted tie footpath which had been promised when he built in Laing street. It was much needed.— Works Committee to ace. REPORTS. The Works Committee’s report detailed the fortnight’s street maintenance work done. The committee recommended that a rough 3£t 6in footpath be formed in [Libor terrace, Carey Bay, at an estimated cost of £53. In respect to assisting the Waikouaiti Council in respect to road repairing the committea had- no recommendation to make, but in respect to getting another sanitary contractor the calling for application? for the position was recommended. —Cr M'Lachlan thought that, sav, £2O should have been given the Waikouaiti County Council, and he moved that the matter be referred back to the committee. —This was not agreed to.—-Tho report as submitted was adopted. The Gas Committee reported on a number of minor matters in connection with the gasworks. Inquiries were still being actively made for a new lead of retorts. The receipts amounted to £BB 3s 9d, and expenditure to £69 6s 6d.—Adopted. The Reserves Committee reported that the forester was cutting the trees in the cemetery and splitting them up. There was a good demand for the wood.— Adopted. ANOTHER. RESERVOIR PROPOSED. Cr Allan moved—“ That a committee be Appointed to consider and report on tho aavisabilitv of securing the* water rights of Cold Water Creek and constructing a reservoir above the railway line, with a view to supplementing the present water supply of the borough, to increasing the pressure on the higher levels, and to installing a water supply for Mans ford Town.”—At the Mayor’s, suggestion the motion was amended to deal with the whole water supply, and thus amended the motion was agreed to. the committee to ha the Water Committee.
