PIPING AND DANCING

EIGHTH ANNUAL COMPETITIONS.

The eighth annual competitions held under the auspices of the Otago Centre of the Piping and Dancing Association of New Zealand were decided in His Majesty's Theatre yesterday and last evening. These competitions are becoming more popular year by year, as was proved by the very substantial increase in the number of entrants in almost every section this year, and also by the fact that, in spite of the numerous counter-attrac-tions, the theatre was well filled by an enthusiastic audience. Keen rivalry characterised every contest, with the Tesult that the performances reached a high standard of merit. Competitors journeyed from as far north as Masterton, Wellington, Fairlie, . and Timnru to test their abilities against the local exponents of the pastime. The morning was occupied with the pibroch section, the afternoon session being devoted to general piping and_ dancing, while the finals were decided in the evening. As an indication of the expeditious manner in which the arrangements were carried out, it may be mentioned that the finals, consisting of 24 competitions, which came up for adjudication in the evening, wore disposed of in three hours. A feature of the juvenile dancing was the great anecess scored by Master E. Robinson, of Dunedin, who came first in five events, while Miss Winnie Robinson, who is one of the most graceful dancers in the Dominion, was sJbo very successful.
