FREEZING WORKS

SSTITHFIELD AND PAREORA. [gPKCIAL TO THE 'STAR.'] TTMARU, March 21. i T,- or some years past it has been the custom for the hutchers employed m the Smithfleld and Pareora freenng works to attach a tag to the carcass of each sheep a* it is killed, the object being to enable the tracing of anv faults in the kihmg. The butchers have objected to continuing 1 the practice, the reason given at Pareora beitiff that the tags were dangerous to the workers' hands, and at Simthfield that the tags were not clean. In the case of Pareora ne-w tags, which are said to bo quite safe, have been provided, and the necessary facilities for cleansing the copper taga have been provided. At Smithfield the butchers have held a meeting to consider the matter, and another meeting will be held to-morrow to decide upon a definite course of action. In view of the position in North Canterbury, it is interesting to learn that the works in South Canterbury still have ample storage space at command; in fact, South. Canterbury is probably better situated in this respect than any other part of the Dominion. For many weeks ahead the shipping problem need cause no anxiety in South Gartarbury. Killing ca-n be continued at the present rate, and all the carcasses that will )J juire storage can bo dealt -witti satisfactorily. Though works elsewhere are closing down, the employees at Pareora and Smithfleld hare a lons'run in front of them.
