BOWLING

CHAMPION OP CHAMPION::

BARNETT AND OARSWELL IN THE PINAL.

Play in the Dunedin Centre tournament to find the champion of champions was resumed this morning on the Dunedin green. Mr J. H. Matheson, president of the centre, had charge, and Mr R. Hanning (secretary) looked after the detail work. The was in lovely order — keen, but with a''nice bite in the grass. The play was not brilliant. A fickle breeze that sprang up about 10.30 interfered with the calculations. Results : —Sixth Round.— A. Barnett (Roslyn) 21, D. Smith (Caledonian) 16.—Smith put his last bowl into a very narrow opening—a beautiful robbing shot. In the second h&d Barnett drew a btsaAity with his last, spoiling Smith's 3. Smith got a couple in the third, head, and in the fourth J3arnett failed with a running shot, Smith scoring 1. Smith had to burn in the fifth head, and then Barnett got 3, making the score 4 all. Barnett got 1 in the sixth and Smith 2 in the seventh, the score then beino- : Smith 6, Barnett 5. In the eighth head the Roslyn man had the bad luck to cut kitty to Smith when trying for a three, and Smith got a single. The ninth head gave Barnett 1, and tho tenth 2, so he led by 8-7. In the eleventh, a short head, Barnett did not find length, and Smith got 4, one a toucher. Three to Barnett by superior drawing made the score 11 all after tho twelfth head. (Smith got 2 in the thirteenth and Barnett 1 in the fourteenth, the score then being : Smith IS, Barnett 12. In the fifteenth Smith tried to drive and missed, and Barnett lay 3. In the sixteenth Smith rested Barnett out, but Barnett with his last took the jack with him and scored 2, the total being Barnott 17 to 13. A single to Barnett with a toucher in the seventeenth head ; a 3 to the same man by good drawing in the eighteenth. Smith got a single in the nineteenth head, drawing with his last bowl. In the twentith head Smith drew 2, and as he was 5 to tho bad he resigned, W. Carswell (Taieri) 34, F. Jones (Balmacewen) 9.—Jones scored a single in the first head, then Carswell scored 3, 2, and 2. Jones replied with 1 and 2, and then Carswell got 4, all of perfect width, the score after the seventh head being-: Garswell 11, Jones 4. CaTswell got 3, and then 1, but on the tenth head Jones came to light with 3. Carswell had to bum in the eleventh head, and then ran the kitty into the ditch, scoring 1. Jones got 1 ill the twelfth and Carswell 3 in the tliirteonth, Jones missing with a drive. A single to Jones in the fourteenth (a poor head), and the score was: Carswell'l9. Jones 9. Carswell got 2in the fifteenth.! 2 in the sixteenth, and l'in the seventeenth, Jones losing form, and that was tho ond of jt. E. liarraivay (Dunedin) a bye. —Semi-final.— As Harraway had the previous bye he could not be given tho bye this time,- so Barnett and Carswell drew for it, and Carswell won, leaving Barnett and Harraway to play the semi-final. It resulted thus : A. Barnett (Boslyn) 17, E. Harraway (Dunedin) 9.—ln the four opening head's the play was below form, Harraway mostly narrow. Barnett scored 2 and 2, then Harraway 2 and Barnett 2. In the fifth head with his third took the kitty and lay a eingJo. In the sixth head Barnett scored with two good bowls; all the others wei\> merely in the neighborI hood. In the seventh Barnett was a bit short with three of his bowls, and Harraway drew a good one, making the score : Barnett 8, Harraway 4. A deserved single to Barnett in a long head, and a then better-deserved single to Harraway with [ his fourth ball left Barnett 9-5 after the ninth head. The wind was now making itself felt. In the tenth head Harraway lay 1, and Barnett vainly tried with his last to run it out. Harraway put up one. very good bowl (his second) in the eleventh head, but Barnett beat it with a beautiful toucher. In the twelfth head Harraway drew with his second almost en to the jack, and Barnett with a running shot took him out and lay, this bowl surviving Harraway's drive with his last. Another single to Barnett, all tho bowls but one of good width against a tricky wind, and Bnrnctt led by 14-8. For the seventeenth head Barnett made it full length, and with his second bowl carried tho jnck and lay with it. Harraway's second went into the gutter, and he could not with the others spoil Bametfs good one. Barnett 15-8. Harraway drew with a nice one in the eighteenth, and it was a measure for second. Barnett 15-9. Another single to Barnett in very moderate play, Harraway short with the important bowl, made the score 16-9, Harraway wanting two fours to win. In the next head Harraway put his first ball so wide on the fore hand that it was almost on the line, and that practically settled it. Barnett lay 1, and Harraway tried to drive it out with his last bowl, but went right through. —Final.— The final was to be started at 2 o'clock, Carswell with iwo lives to Barnett's one.
