BREWERS' HUGE PROFITS
Mr Alden, in the House o! Commons, asked tho Chancellor of the Exchequer whother he was awaro of the inflated profits of the breweries and the liquor trado generally during the last year, owing to the permission to increase tho prico of intoxicating liquors, and what action ho proposed to take. Mr Bonar Law said that he was aware that high profits had recently been made by tho liquor trade. These wore subject to the Excess Profits Tax of 80 per cent. Mr Ciynes has supplied the following information regarding tho amount of grain, etc., used in browing boer in the first nine month of last year : Malt. Bice. Maize. Sugar.* Bushels. Cwt. Cwi Cwfc. 28,620,800 61,200 6,200 1,615,700 * And its equivalences. During the year 16,133,800 standard barrels of beer were brewed, and 18,549,406 proof gallons of spirits retained for consumption.
