Clark) Crs Hayward, Small, Scott, Carroll, Brad ley, Hancock, Wilson, Macdonald, Kellett Douglas, Black, Lunn. Taverner, Shack lock, Thompson, and Sincock. The council passed a vote of condoleno with Cr Black in the death of his wife. The organising secretary of the Dun edin Eeturned Soldiers' Association ap plied for permission to hold a garden fete in which admission would bo charged, ii the Botanic Gardens on Saturday, Apri 15.—Granted. SAMOA. The .Town Clerk of Auckland for warded the following resolution, which tb council" were asked to support : "In view of the great public interes now being shown regarding the questioi of the disposal of Samoa at the conclusioi of the war, that this council urge upoi the New Zealand representatives at thi forthcoming Imperial Conference th< necessity of strenuously advocating th< retention of that portion of the Samoar group taken from Germany, in Britisl hands, and that the municipal council* and other public bedies throughout th( Dominion be requested to co-operate ir this direction, thereby strengthening the hands of our representatives when the time arrives for dealing with this mosi momentous question." Cr Douglas moved—" That the councr endorse the resolution." This was seconded by Cr Hayward and carried. LEE STREAM. In answer to a question by Cr Hancock as to whether anything had been done in regard to the Lee Stream water supply the Mayor said that no steps had so far'bren taken. It was not possible to get labor or the material required' in the present state of affairs if they wished to proceed with the scheme. ELECTRIC POWER AND LIGHTING. Cr Shaeklock, in moving the adoption of the new rate for electric lighting, said that it would be particularly adaptable to small users. It should prove an economical and popular form of lighting. They had heard about the increased cost o*f living, and the commitee. wore making an honest attempt to reduce it in one direction, . particularly to small householders who were still burning kerosene. Cr Bradley said he wanted'to move an amendment in collection with tho dismissal of an employee at Waipori. He wished that the man be reinstated and compensated. The Mayor pointed out that the matter was not mentioned in tho Teport, and said that Cr Bradley should give notice of motion. Cr Bradley said he would do so. Cr Kellett moved that the clause dealing with payments be referred back, as he wanted to know if an employee had been discharged. After discussion Cr Kellett said he would let Cr Bradley's notico of motion ao through. & The report was adopted. The dismissal of the employee was later discussed in committee, when Cr Shaddock- explained the whole position. AIARYHILL TRAMWAY. Cr Scott moved the adoption of the report of the Tramways Committee, who submitted the following in regard to the instruction from the council that they should report why the resolution of the council of the 21st of March last to proceed with the relaying of the Maryhill line had not been given effect to. For tho information of the council the committee desire to report that, having regard to the several circumstances, and with the hope oi providing the residents of Mornington with some tentative tramway provisions, they have investigated the possibility of providing a motor vehicle to run on the iMgin road rails. The'inquiry has proved however, that it is impossible to secure a vehicle to meet the requirements stipulated by the Public Works Department, and the committee hope at next meeting of the council to report the probable cost of reopening the Maryhill line, assuming that the council are prepared to authorise the biting of the Klgfh road rails without further regard to the Elgin road Order m Council. The estimated cost will in(a) Lifting sufficient rails from j Jilgin road and relaying same, to replace JO- chains ot defective track in Marvhill ■ (b) new slot rail for the remaining 20 chains of the Maryhill line; (c) cost of installing the requisite boiler power; and (d) cost of repairs to the engine used in hauling the car on this particular line When the latter data is before the council the question of what action, if any, should -he taken u, the immediate future can be determined, and in this connection the tuture policy of extensions in the ATornmgton district should also- engage attenCr Douglas seconded the motion. Cr Hayward said he would like the committee to consider the question of installing an electric motor for the Marvhill line. Cr Sincock thanked the committee for what they had done. If they had to wait lor electricity for the line they would have to wait a long time. What was wanted was a boiler to allow the department to go straight ahead with the work Ihe report was adopted.
