THE SHAKE MARKET
Business was again very brisk on the Dunedin Stock Exchange this morning, when a large number of sales were effected at the first call. Considerable activity was again apparent in i shipping shares, which showed a further sharp rise. Since the rumored amalgamation of the Huddart-Parker and Howard-Smith Lines, the shares of the former company hare advanced steadily in price, and aiv now very close to the £2 mark. Seven sales of the ordinary issue of HuddartParkers were made this morning, ranging from £1 16s 9d to £1 17s 6d. The market closed firm with further buyers at £1 17s 6d, and sellers at £1 18s, which is the highest quotatoin yet recorded for this stock on the local market. A sale was also effected in the preference issue of Huddart-Parkers at £1 Os 9d. National Banks were wanted at £5 7s 6d, without a seller, whilst the old issue of Bank of Now Zealands was on offer at £l2 8s 6clNew Zealand Insurances had buyers at £8 6s, and sellers at £8 Bs. The latest quotations for National Insurances are £2 19s 9d and £3 Is, buyer and seller. WestportStocktons (ordinary) were looked for at 8s 6d, but sellers were asking 9s. New Zealand Paper Mills had a close market, buyers offprint: 19s "and sellers asking 19s 4d. In the mininp market Mount Lvells at £1 9s 7d had buyers at £1 9s 4d, while Waihis were quoted at £1 18s and £1 19s, lmver and seller respectively.
