TECHNICAL COLLEGE

The monthly meeting of the King Ed«ord Technical College Board of Managers, fceld yesterday afternoon, was: attended by Messrs Scott (chairman), Wilkinson, Hel|yer, Burt, Wallace, ' Christie, Duthie, M'Kinlay, Hayward, Brugh. The Appointments Committee reported that an elementary corttse in general scienceibearing on the'home having been made compulsory for all girls holding junior •free places, a teacher of the subject was and the committee had therefore resolved to recommend the appointment of a graduate in home science at a salary of £l9O-£220. To fill the vacancy created by_ the, resignation of 'Miss Little, the appointment of a teacher (preferably one with a University diploma) for practical cookery and laundrywork at a salary of £l5O-£IBO was recommended. The committee had agreed to an assistant teacher of cookery at £llO-£I2Q being appointed in place of the two probationers, whose period of service was now completed. The increased attendance necessitated the appointment of at least two additional teachers, and after careful consideration the committee had decided to recommend that a certificated teacher qualified to take the physical exercises of the girls, an interest in their games, and probably some general woTk be added to the staff at a salary of £l4O-£170; also a commercial teacher, with office experience in shorthand and bookkeeping, at a salary of £l4O-£l7O. In order that these positions might be filled before the end of the month, the director had been ii'istrfcted to advertise the vacancies.—The report was adopted. Appointments to be referred to the committee, who would report to a meeting of the- board on the 28th inst. The Works Committee reported on the asphalting of the upper ground. They had found certain portions had not been'satisfactorily done. They recommended that the further progress payment asked for by the contractor be made only on condition that an undertaking be given that an even surface and even grade be provided • in accordance with the specification.— The report was adopted. The Director reported that the day school opened last week with a greatly increased, enrolment, the number of pupils now in attendance being 574, ns against 299 for the corresponding week of last year. Of this number 95 (boys) were taking the industriarcourse. 236 Ibovs and girls) the commercial course, and 43 girls the domestic course. The increased attendance necessitated additional assistance, and the services of Messrs J. Jefferv and D. Murray had been secured. The Director recommended that the scholarships and bursary, available for students of the domestic course, be awarded as follows: Callander Scholarships of £5 each : Mavis 'E. Anderson, Mary Belcher, Hazel Hebbard, Mena Henslev," Catherine LinoDoris .Miller, Nellie M'Pherson, Mona Mnnro, Jean'Riaoh, Mirella Shaw. Caledonian Society Scholarships of £10: —Jessie M'P'herson, Marv Ridfimd. Bursary of £ls:—Ella "Pithie. For the junior examination six pupils were presented from the day school, and all passed high in the list, two being marked with credit. Another pupil who left the day school during- the year also passed with credit, while two who had been in the day school parsed. Three pupils-from the evening classes passed the junior examination. Six- candidates were presented for the senior examination, and all passed, thus maintaining the record of the Technical College.—Report adopted. Miss Little wrote resigning her position as teacher of cookery, and thanking the board for consideration shown her during her period of service.—The Chairman moved that the board place on record their appreciation of Miss Little's able services to the college during the man*- rears she

had held the position of teacher of cooking. This was carried manimoualy. Mr Q. M. Thomson wrote advocating the teaching of music in the college.— The matter was referred to the Appointments Committee for report.
