ACCIDENTS AND DEATHS

An inquest was held at Gore in regard to tho death of James Dodds from burns by scalding whey in the sugar of milk factory at Edendale on New- Year’s Eve. From the evidence it appeared that deceased had been supervising the boiling of the whey in a 2,000 gal vat. The boiling was done by steam up to 121deg Fahrenheit. At this heat the steam was turned off. On tho night in question Dodds, who had been employed, in the factory for only three months, had .been told to'turn tho steam on only two turns, so as not to take too much from the boiler. The opinion of witnesses was that, going to turn off the steam, deceased had accidentally turned it fnll on, and that the scalding stuff had then blown out over him. Then he seemed to have fallen from the 12ft platform to tho concrete floor. The platform was fully 4ft wide, and protected by a hand-rail. The jury returned a verdict of death from accidental burns, no'blame being attachable to anyone.
