AND OVER £I,OOO SURE, The ladies who worked for the Red Cross cause yesterday were to-dav tired but perfectly happy— aglow with tile content that is the fruit of a successful effort. The results exceeded anticipations. The executive of the Dunedin centre reported this morning that nil the stalls sold clean out, that tho collection and tho sales had resulted In £7BO bcinz in hand by noon to-day, and that, as all the country donations except four have yet to come in, and nearly all the branches have made some effort, there is a certainty that the total will exceed £I,OOO and may « e t prettv near to £1,500. "
Half • the r-roceeds are to ba sent to the British R?d Cross, and half to the New Zealand Red Cross in London. In addition to tho cash donations reported yesterday, the following sums have been handed in-:—Dr Colquhoun. £5 ; Mrs W. F. Edmond. £5: Lieutenant-colonel T. A. Hunter. &rs ; W. Scoular awli Co., £10; Watson Rhennnn. £5: Mrs Watson Shonnan, £5; Tarntn Coal Oompanv, 3<?s; A. Ladng, £5: H. Price, ?.%s: MrsMacki? and Mr Marine. £1 ; F.~ H. Campbell, £1 Is; Mrs Fish. £l. Dozens of persons put £1 notes into the hoses.
Hundreds of men and women who are not well off mnde it a pleasure to spend what they could spare "in purchasing at the stalls, thus making it really a people's effort.
Tho executive ask us to convey their thanks to all who came forward to h?]p. The branches of the society worked with perfect unity for the- yake of the suffering and dyin# soMiers. Snch tokens of versa! sympathy are most cheering, nnd thev strengthen one's faith in our common humanity. ' Much aid was g-Ven bv tho Bank of Now Zealand staff in attending to the receiving and the counting of the money, and also by th.? men in the New Zealand Express Company's service for their willing Assistance in puttinsr out the tables and doinrr all sorts of npeful work.
The Ofcngo Women's Club, the St. Joseph's Ladies' Association, and the Oversea Club joined very heartily in the effort, and the Port Chalmers ladies worked most enthusiastically. As an evidence of the good feeling in Port Chalmers, wo may mention that the local bmnch of tho Pwl Gross received from the ladies of the local Patriotic Association a message wishing them success, and enclosing a donation of £5.
