OBITUARY

Our Christchurch correspondent telegraphs : A private cable from Durban announces the death of Mrs David Caro, widow of the late Mr David Caro, who in his earlier days was well known in Christchurch as a wine and spirit merchant. Mrs P. Metz ,of Chnstchurch, is a daughter of Mrs Caro. The death is announced of Mr W. C. Dudley, a very prominent Taranaki resident. He was for various terms chairman of the ODimake Town Board, the Egmont County Council, a member of the Licensing Committee, and was actively associated with the public and social life of the district in many capacities. He was a familiar figure for some years at. the bowling tournaments, and was a member of a Taranaki team which toured Australia. Mr John M'Lean, who died at Totara on Monday morning, was born and educated in Oamaru. On leaving school Mr M'Lean joined the staff of the old Colonial Bank, and was taken over by the Bank of New Zealand at tho time of amalgamation. Mr M'Lean was for a time at the head office of the bank in Wellington, but was reappointed to tho Oamaru branch as teller some eight years ago, and later was appointed accountant, which position he held at the time of his death. Deceased, who was in his forty-third year, is survived by his widow* who, prior to her marriage, was Miss Platts, a member of a well-known Port Chalmers family. An old Auckland resident, in the person of Mr Wm. Lodder, died at Drummovne, Sydney, last week. • Mr Lodder was "one of New Zealand's early pioneers. Ho was a native of Dorsetshire, and oame out here 61 years ago, and saw servico during the Waikato War, when he acted as engineer on a small steamer on the Waikato River. For a time he held the position of Llovd's surveyor at Auckland. He was a prominent member of the Masonic fraternity, having been master of the Remuera LooVe and also District Grand Master. Some 25 years ago he and Mrs Lodder went to Sydney, where they celebrated their golden wedding. Mr Lodder's eldest son holds the position of chief engineer for the Gear Freezing Works, Wellington, and the other two sons are engineers in Australia.
