AMERICAN HUMOR

Mr Wesley Bratt gave a lecture last night in the social room of tho Octagon Hall, his subject being 'American Humor.' The proceeds are to go in aid of the Maori deaconess fund. The Rev. Clarence Baton psesidud. Mr Bratt laid it down that th:j basis of humor is always placed in the disharmony of things, iie also Raid that America had very little literature, vet she had given to the -world quaint humor thai was quite unique. That -was about all ho said on the subject. The rest of the lecture consisted almost entirely of recitations from representative -writers, Mark Twain, Bret ITarte, Artemus Ward, Walt Mason, Edward Nye, and others (some of them not named) being levied upon. The audience evidently enjoyed tin lecture. At intervals contributions wen supplied by Mrs WI Pacey (songs), Mr W. E, Currie (clarinet), and Mr Bratt (piano).
