NEW BATTLE CRUISER MINED DOING HER SPEED TRIALS EM HELIGOLAND BIGHT. AMSTERDAM, October 8. (Received October 9, at 9.35 a.m.) A traveller from Hamburg states that at the beginning of last week a new German battle cruiser, while undergoing her speed trials off Heligoland, struck a mine, and had to bo towed to port seriously damaged. Twenty-three of her crew were drowned, including three officers.

BARNARDO DAY TO-MORROW. _ The Otago Women's Patriotic Association were very busy to-day making preparations for the street collection to-mor-row in aid of the Barnardo Homes. This appeal is bound to meet with a liberal response from the charitably-minded, for the care of the fatherless is a" noble work, and it has been carried out with great success by the Barnardo institutions. " The everopen door" is their motto. No child is refused admission. There will be a magnificent display of daffodils on the stalls to-morrow, Lawrence growers having sent word that they are sending by this evening's express about 30,000 choice blooms. These will be sold for the benefit of the fund. Anyone wisliing to see them to-night—and it will be a fine sight—may do so by calling at the Early Settlers' Hall between 9 and 9.30.
