OTAGO SECOND DIViSION LEAGUE.
, j TO THJ3 EDITOR. ! Sir, —As ono of those associated with i the Otago Second .Division League I should • like to point out that your correspondent , “A Second Ulvisirmist ’ has not appreci- > ated the full meaning of the original letter I on this subject. In order to dispel any misunderstanding, i I would state that the original intention > was to form an association which would ■ be an aid to Reservists and to military aul thorities alike. One of the intention-, wa-. to enable married men to form parties for 3 voluntary service if they so desired, but - this does not necessarily mean that mem.. 3 bers of the league should he required to c volunteer. That is a matter to be left i wholly in the hands of the individual, i Another intention of the originator o’f the - league—and this is the part your cones b j poiuient overlooked— was to approach the s Government in an endeavor to obtain adcy equate allowances for the dependents oi n those who have gone to the front. These a original ideas have since been much amplis I tied, ami the platform now laid down by . : the league is one that will, 1 think, appeal i to ail right-thinking men, be they rich or u 1 poor, married or single, n I Wo understand that another association n jon similar lines was started, in perfectly .s ; good faith, about the same time as ours, it i and our committee have been instructed tc ;, | arrange a meeting, so that the two platd i forms can be fully discussed. If thest i prove to be in harmony, it is certainly tc n the interests of all concerned that the'twc it organisations should join forces. This i.e the reason why our platform has not yel d been made public. In the meantime) J if do not see that any useful purpose can bt c- served by further discussion, but as sooi as the objects of the league are made pub d lie then discussions and suggestions will bt
in order. Might I, suggest that correspondents discard “noms do plume”? If a man has an honest conviction he will certainly give more weight to his letter if he is not afraid to sign his name at the end of it.—l am, etc., C. F. Shaw. January 29.
