LONDON, September 19, Dr A. A. 'Martin, of j?ahnerston North, has died of wounds at the New Zealand btationary Hospital in France.

PALMERSTON N., September 21. 1 The late Dr Man in was born in SouthIziikl, and was o9 years’ ot age. His youth was spent at Lurasdon, about SO miles from Invercargill, where his father, Mr Thomas Martin, was engaged in the Railway Service. He commenced his scholastic career at the Lumsden Public School, after which he attended the Southland High School in Invercargill, where he acquitted himself brilliantly. and afterwards entered the Government Life Insurance Department. Young Martin, however, was not content with the. ■routine life of office work, and, setting Iris mind on _ the medical profession, left lor England in 1894- to take up his -studies. entered the Edinburgh University, where his medical course was marked with briUiauce, and he was awarded the diplomas nw* 1 ?” CJUI - and F-E.C S.Ed. He Uttered as surgeon in the Boer War, wheo,' he rendered good services, returning to New Zealand, where he was connected with the Uovermnont Life Insurance Department. Coming to Palmersum in 1903, he soon gained a large practice, his skill as a surgeon ootng widespread. He was in England when war broke out in 1914, and offered his services, going to the west front ns surgeon, t.o returned to the Dominion to recuperate, and again proceeded to the front some months ago Dr Martin’s parents live at Lumsden. He also leaves five brothers and two sisters. Ho was married, but there ta -no tauiily.
