ACCIDENTS AND DEATHS

Charles Sheard, a returned soldier, who has Been an inmate of the Avondala Mental Hospital since April 28, escaped ,r>un that institution on Saturday, and n;s dead body was found yesterday in a smaU creek on the hospital property. Hu was 35 years of age. Mr JL Y. Widdowson, S.M., conducted an inquiry yesterday afternoon into tha circumstances surrounding the death of Mrs Maria Anderson (83), who died suddenly at the residence of her daughter (Mrs Blair), Rutherford street. Caversham. After hearing Dr Ldndon’s evidence, the coroner returned a verdict that death was due to apoplexy. A painful accident occurred to Mr J. Hillocks, employee of Messrs Bunten and dark, while working the motor garage a “ B ;, k!uihaon Friday (says the ‘Leader’). -Mr Vvillocks had entered the pit to recover a piece of machinery that had*fallen, into it, when an explosion occurred, with the result that his clothing was quickly in flames. Mr G. Aitkeu, who was close by, ran to his fellow-employee's assistance, and was successful in extinguishing the flames, hut not before Mr Willocks had sustained painful and somewhat severe burns to his face and hands. Mr Aitken also had his hands rather badly burned. On Thursday afternoon, whilst driving an express with two horses from Dunedin, Mr Alex. Allison, of Milton, met with ait accident that might have had more seriout consequences. It appears that when coming down Look-out Point hill a young horse ho was driving bored across the road on to the wrong side as a motor car came round a corner ascending the hill. Though lie succeeded in bringing his team to a standstill, the car crashed into it, killing one horse and injuring the other to ah extent that it had to be destroyed. The vehicle was badly smashed, and Mr Allison received a_ considerable shaking, the car also receiving some damage.—“"Bruca' Herald.’
