UNIVERSITY COUNCIL

The monthly meeting of the Council of Otago University was attended this afternoon by the Chancellor (the Rev. A. Cameron), the Rev. Professor Hewitson, Drs Benham and Malcolm, the Hon. T. MacGibbon, Mr John Roberts. C.M.G., Messrs John Ross, W. J. Morrell, T. K. Sidey, M.l> W, Endey, J. C. Stephens, P. M Kinloy, and J. H. Walker. The Finance Committee reported that the statement of receipts oiid expenditure (affecting the general account) from February 21 to March 27 was: Receipts, £2,515 10s 3d; expenditure, £2,494 17s 3d; true balance, £495 2s 44. Expenditure on other accounts for the month was reported as under:—Scholarship and prize .funds account, £52; building fund accommittee further reported on the advisability of asking for repeal or amendment of the Otago University Reserves Act, that Messrs Sidey and Stephens had been asked to report on the legal aspect, and the chairman and registrar to collect such other information as was deemed necessary. It was reported finally that the chairman had undertaken to take the necessary steps to enable the funds collected for the pathological block to be handed over to tho University.—Adopted. Mr Stephens moved—"That in the case of future appointments of assistants at a salary of more than £SO per annum the appointments lie advertised." Hon. T. Mac Gibbon seconded. After some discussion the motion was lost by a large majority. Dr Champtaloup wrote stating he 'had arranged with Mr R, S. J. Fitzgerald to give tuition in bacteriology under his supervision to three students who had been retnrnerL/ftom the front too late for his ordinary class. He suggested that either whole or half tho fees of these students bo paid to Mr Fitzgerald.—Received; Mr Fitzgerald to bo paid the whole of the fees.

Surgeon-general Henderson wrote stating that the request of Colonel Pai;kes had been approved*—viz., that Major Barnctt should continue to serve in Egypt, but return at tho beginning of next year.— Received. The Hon. Secretary of the Students' Association wrote asking permission to erect in the Allen Hall a brass tablet of names of past presidents and a "debating" board containing names of winners interfaculty debates.—Referred to Works Committee.

The Prime Minister wrote notifying bis willingness to cable to the High Commissioner with a, view of obtaining Dr Drennan's release from military duties in time to allow of his arrival in New Zealand by December cablegram received by the Prime Minister from Hon. 'J'. Mackenzie stated that Dr Drennan's contract with the War Office expired on October s.—Received.
