ACCIDENTS AND DEATHS

A colli.-ion occurred on Sunday between two motor cars at the. intersection of Papanui and Norman's roads, Christehurch. As a result, Bernard Tracey, an elderly man, from White Rock, North Loburn, and Stanley Edlin, of Fereival street, Rangiora, aged about 26 years, were badly injured. .Mr Tracey died in the hospital yesterday, but Mr Edlin. is improving. Gu Friday morning Samuel Stark, who has been employed at the Mataura Paper -Mills for tho last 36 years, fell a distance of 7ft at the rag chopper pit, and as lie fell a bale of flax tow fell on his head and rendered him unconscious. Dr Fleming was at once sent for, and on examination pronounced him .suffering from concussion of tho brain. The sufferer (the 'Southland Times' states) is in a verv dangerous condition.

Edward Garth, about 55 years of age, married, met with an accident while employed tailing-out at Macpherson Bros.' mill at Otautau a fortnight ago, and after a brief absence from his employment returned to work, but owing to the pain from which he was suffering he had to call in medical assistance (says the ' Southland News'). His condition gradually became worse, and he died on ' Friday. The two attending doctors held a postmortem examination, and found that tho accident was tho cause of death. it appears that Garth at the time of the, occurrence was at his usual employment when a flitch from tho bench struck him in the abdomen, causing internal injury. Ho leaves a widow and five of a faniilv. Raymond Toms, about 17 years of age. whose parents live in Timaru. was accidentally drowned in the Orari River on Sunday (says the 'Herald'). George Ruthven. a well-known resident of Mosgiel. aged 69. who was brought to fche Dunedin Hospital on .Sunday "afternoon suffering from an injured spine, <<ie<l in there last evenin.g. Mr Ruthven's injuries were .sustained through his falling oft a, stack upon which ho was working with another man. An inquest was held at the Hospital, late this afternoon.
