OBJECTIONS OF FRIENDLY SOCIETIES.

[Per Uxitkd Prks.s .Association.]

WELLINGTON April 13. The Hons. J. A. Hanan and A. .\L Myers addressed a conference of friendly societies' delegates to-day relative to the competition of the National Provident Fund. .Air Hanan referred to the good work of the friendly societies. He said that since 1887 they had paid in sickness allowances £1.251.933, death allowances £257,690, medical fees £1,162,105. The social insurance functions of the Dominion are officially directed towards tho solution provision"for the old age problem, for which policy the National Provident Fund Act stands. No societies provided for this social insurance. The functions of tho Government were not at present directed to provide benefits of friendly societies as in Great Britain. Details of the. new annuity scheme would bo laid before the conference. The Government sincerely desired to learn the societies' view of the problem, and extension of the provident fund. Tf it meant the extension of those thrift principles which tho societies had done much to foster it should be the aim of all to encourage rather than retard any movements in that direction. Mr Myers stressed the importance of the National Provident scheme, and expressed the opinion that the conference would be of the utmost mutual benefit. Mr Hanan was appointed chairman of the conference.
