"William Jackson, aged 42, died suddenly in'the Hospital yesterday afternoon vmile under an anesthetic for the purpose of having an operation performed on his knee. The deceased, who was single, came from Kahuika, and was admitted to the institution early this month. An inquest was held on the body late this afternoon. Mr Frank Browne, aged 52, married, dredge master, of Millar street, Northeast Valley, died suddenly while working with others' at Adam's Flat. Dr Rosa Collier, of Milton, who examined the body, gave it as her opinion that death was due to heart failure. The ‘Southland News’ gives particulars of the shocking accident which happened on Saturday to the 6j-year-old daughter of Mr James Mackenzie," West Plains. It appears that the child was in a bedroom with two brothers, one aged four and the other two years. The boys were sitting on a chair in front of the‘fire, waiting to be dressed by their mother, and the girl, who was in a flannelette nightdress', was in the act of placing a piece of wood on tlie fire when the garment she was wearing taught. The fire spread quickly up the arm, and the girl, screaming, ran into the kitchen for the assistance of her mother, who wrapped her skirt round the little sufferer and immediately carried her into the bedroom, where she similarly applied blankets. The accident occurred at 9 a.m., and after olive oil and baking soda had been used to relieve the pain, the girl was removed to the Southland Hospital, whore she died on Sunday afternoon. RACECOURSE FATALITY. JOCKEY KILLED : HORSE DESTROYED. [Per United Press Association.] MARTON, April 12. George Marchant, a jockey, was thrown from the horse The Rover whilst schooling on the Rangitikei Racecourse yesterday morning, and died this morning through injuries to the head and paralysis sotting in. The horse broke his leg, and had to be destroyed.
