DEATH FROM BURNS. Jessie M'Kenzie.- aged 6A- years, died at the l'nvereargill Hospital on Sunday, as the result of shock and burns received through her nightdress, catching fire. The demised was a daughter of Mr James M'Kenzie, drover. West Plains.—'isouthland Times.'

A four-year-old .son of Mr S. Purvis, blacksmith, ITillend, met with a painful accident on Saturday afternoon (says the Balclutha, ' Free Press '). He was 'standing near the. anvil in the smithy, when liis elder brother was striking- a piece, of hot steel, a splinter from wlTieh flew off nnd lodged in the little fellow's left eye. Yesterday morning the sufferer was broncrht to Balclutha to consult Br S.tenl.otw. who, after "examining the eye. found that the piece of .steel "was lodued in the eyeball, and advised the boy's 'removal t> Duncdin Hospital, where the services of a. specialist could be procured, as there was a dimeter of the ei'slit being injured. Accordingly the father'took the little chap to Dumxlin yesterday afternoon. Regarding the death of Mr George Gardiner (formerly of Gore) the Oamarii ' -Mail' gives the following- particulars of the accident :—Between 7 and 8 o'clock on April 6 George Andrew Gardiner, auctioneer with Messrs "Wright. Stephenson, and Co., was driving a, two-seater motor car into town from Otiako. At the same time 'William M'Phee was driving a spring dray from Awamoko westwards! At a spot about, 200 yds on the Oamnru sid". of the Awamoko Post Oltieo a collision occurred, the right shaic of the dray penetrating the wind-«erecn of the car and sinking Mr Gardiner with great, force in tho abdomen. The. injuries sustained by the unfortunate man were very severe, and death supervened in about. 20 minutes. The driver of the dray was thrown out. but not hurt. The dray, it is stated, was en its right cide of the" roach.
