THE PROPHET RUA
A party of six armed police, under Subinspector Johnston, left Gisborne yesterday for Rua’s stronghold, to co-operate with the Auckland' polio© party. Rua is believed to be in ambush at Maungatohuta. about 70 miles from Gisborne, over very rough country. People who are acquainted with the district believe that should the occasion arise llua and his followers will make towards Waikaremoana, where very heavy bush will assist him.
A story is in circulation among the Gisborne Maoris that Rua is pretty well supplied with rifles and ammunition from Syrian hawkers, who bought them casually in Auckland and smuggled them into the orewera Country under their fancy goods. The story that Rua lias a machine gnn is fenerally discredited. R.ua’s bodyguard ia nown to comprise several hundred Maoris, and the local Natives believe that he will firmly resist arrest unless he is confronted by an overwhelming, force, in which event he would take to the bush round WaUm**, mo&oa.
