DISABLED SOLDIERS

training for civil work

TECHNICAL COLLEGES USEFUL

The question of utilising the technical colleges throughout the Dominion for the purpose of training, disabled soldiers in suitable civil occupations was Again before the Board of Managers of the King Edward Technical College yesterday afternoon, when the committee' appointed to consider the report of the Wellington Technical Education Board on the matter , submitted resolutions approving of the suggestion, but pointing out at the same time what they considered to be the duty of the Government, in the event of the scheme being carried into effect. _ The committee submitted recommendations as follows

(11 That the Dunedin Technical School Board express their full sympathy with the proposed training of * disabled soldiers, and undertake to qo-operite with other similar institutions in any general scheme devised for the purpose. '(2) That the board urge the Government to make provision for the free training in technical schools of all returned disabled soldiers who desire to take advantage of such training. (3) That the Dunedin Technical School Board are of opinion that the Government should be asked to seek the co-opera-tion of employers’ and trade unions with the Labor Department in propounding some practical scheme of employment for the disabled soldiers. The Chairman, in moving the adoption of the report, said that the committee had carefully considered the matter and thought that that was the only way in which the hoard could deal with it. With regard to clause (2), they thought ■it was only right that if the board took in disabled soldiers the Government should pay capitation while they were in the school. As regards clause ait yas, of course, no use the technical ools doing anything unless the employers’ associations and trade unions co-operated with the Labor Department; otherwise they would be right dead against the Arbitration Court at once. Mr G. M. Thomson seconded the motion, which was carried without further discussion.
