CKTY POLICE COURT. (Before J. R. Bartholomew, Esq., S.M.) Drunkenness.—Letitia Berkley and a first offender were each fined 5s or 24 hours. 1 . Idlo and Disorderly.—John Henry Russell, a young man, was charged with being an idle and; disorderly person in that he did beg alms.—Henry M'Kay, a, farmer, said that he v.ne in Princes street last evening, when accused- accosted him and asked him for 2s-, saying .that he had a. cheque which he could not cash that night. Witness said lie would not give him money, but would sea him right for the night. lie then called witness names, and wanted to light him.—Constable Fitzgerald also gave evidence. He said accused had no cheque on him when arrested.—Accused said ho had no recollection of speaking to the complainant.—His Worship said it appeared to him to have been the deliberate act of a rogt'e. That was l.oin out by the circumstances, and by accused's conduct. He would be sentenced lo_one month's imprisonment. William. lung was charged with drunkenness, and also with being an idle and disorderly person, having insufficient lawful means of Mipport-.—Sub-inspector Broberg said that accused had been warned on several occasions by Detective Hammerly to leave the town, but had not done so. Accused wa s more of a drunken foot than anything else.—His Worship fined accused 5s or 24 hours' on the first charge. On the other charge he was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when railed upon within sis months, on condition that ho went to work and took out a prohibition order. Prohibited.—Hugh Kerr Kane, a- prohibited person, charged with procuring liquor, was lined £2. and costs (7s). or 14 days. The Infants Act.—Mary Merrie was charged with at Mornington receiving into her charge an infant for the purposes of nursing and maintaining without being licensed under the Infants Act. Mr Dawson appeared for the defendant, who pleaded guilty ,—Tho Sub-inspector said that the defendant was a most respectable woman. For over five weeks she had m infant about three years of age at her home which was not re"i»tered. Tho child'was well cared for!— Mr Dawson said that the defendant was told that she need 1 not register the child rMt was over three years of age.—His Worship said there would have been no objection to the woman's home been registered. He would take that into account. She had committed a technical breach due to ignorance. The defendant would be fined 20s and costs (7s). By-law Cases.—For allowing the chimney of his premises at St. Kilda to catch fire Daniel Brent was fined 5s- and costs C<s)- For riding a bicycle on a footpath in Wilkic.road, Frederick Ernest Watt, who pleaded not guilty, was similarly dealt with. James " M'Cutcheon was charged with allowing a cow to wander on the railway at Ravensbourne, and was also fined" 5s and costs (7s). Gardening or. Sunday.—long Shanglv, Charles Wong, and Shang Lee were charged with! working in their garden at South Dunedin on Sunday, the 'sth inst. The Sub-inspector said that at 11.20 a.m. on the Sunday in question) the defendants were working for some time in their garden in view of passers-by.—liich defendant was fined 5s and costs (7s). Unregistered Dogs.—For keeping an unregistered dog. Thomas Dove," Steven Barker, Charles Arthur Bolton. Robert Fraser,_ James Randel. Hugh Sutherland Valentine, and John Murdoch were each ordered to pay Court costs. (7s).——Arthur Henry Alexander was fined 10s and costs (7s). A charge against Frank Ellis was dismissed.
