OUR SYDNEY LETTER
THE EMPIRE'S SONS
[By Acting Sergeant John Ross, D.S.C., N.Z.E.] 'Twas a bright and happy day we saiied for Saros Bay, To fight as we liarl never fought before, For the justness of our cause, divine and human laws. And to emulate the British arms of yore. Yet another day was bom, uprose a smiling mom,_ We heard' the shrapnel screech and cannon roar; Like a torrsiit breaking bounds, or unleashing restive hounds, Our gallant lads were sweeping up the shore. •• "Not a moment must be lost, and whatever it may cost. Without a shot those frowning heights we'll take," Said the colonel, firm and loud, and all tho boys were proud To do it for out: dear old England's sake. Australian youth and pride were standing side by side. And chafing at the curb to strike a blow, 'Midst rifle fire and shell they gave one mighty yell: From flank-to flank they clashed upon the foe. New Zealand's worthy sons proud auid dauntless faced the guns, But every ridge and cliff was dearly 1 bought. AJ; credit to their name, they have gathered lasting fame And glory in the battles thoy have fought. We pray that war may oease, may we gain a lasting peace, But not before the dastard cowards fall; So "to arms" we*ll gladly stand and help the Mother Land— Her sons are.ahjivys ready at her call. And when, the war is o'er, „and we sheathe the sword once more, Wo'll talk about the heroes of that day;. And those who'r*. left will tell of hew their comrades fell When landing on the beach at Saros Bay.
