OTAGO HORSE PARADE
A LARGE ENTRY. BARON BOLD. WINS AGAIN. Frequenters of -the main streets of the City during the past day or two could not fail to notice small groups of men —prosperous, burly specimens of manhood, many of them—exchanging opinions. The principal topic of conversation amongst them was horse-breeding. These are farmers and horse-breeders, who had assembled for the annual horse parade, which was held at Forbmy Park to-day, tho Tahuna ground not being available owing to the military authorities not having yet abandoned it. In the early eighties, and' for a number of years afterwards, "walking shows" were extremely popular fixtures. In those days the various stallions placed at the sci"vice of breeders were paraded, and at tho conclusion formed a procession. This method of bringing the horses under the notice of breeders began to lose favor with tho farming community, and in order to repopularise the horse parade agricultural and pastoral societies conceived the idea of offering prizes for competition- amongst horse owners, and the Otago A. and P. Society were probably the prime movers in this innovation. This promoted a spirit of healthy rivalry, and the decisions of highly-qualified judges were accepted almost without cavil. The result to-day is that the annual horse parade, held under the auspices of the Otago A. and P. Society, is a highly popular-fixture, attracting,' as it does, entries from the whole of Otago, Canterbury, and Southland, and the patronage of a large share of visitors from the outlying provinces, in addition to both town and country residents of Otago. The chief event was Class I. in the official programme, which.was a competition for draught stallions (aged), and attracted 42 entries, 39 of which were forward. DRAUGHT STALLIONS (a.ged).~ First prize £5, .second £3, third £2, fourth £l.

As will be seen from the. above list, Messrs Knight (Longburnj and Maeaulay (Maheno) had a diilicidt task before theni, and it was not until past 1 o'clock that the final selection was made. This is the, fourth year in succession that Baron Bold has won in the aged class afcthe Otago horse parade, and this unquestionably stamps him as one of the best sires in the history of the province. To win with an aged horse in such a large class for one year is something to be proud of, but to repeat the, performance four successive years is probably unique in Clydesdale annals iu the Dominion. The second prize taker, Scotland's Stamp, has improved greatly since last parade, when he had to be content with third place in the three-year-old class. He is probably the coming leadin.g. horse in the Dominion. CARRIAGE STALLIONS.—First prize £2, second £l. . J. D. M'Curdy's Marvin Chief 1 C. and J.
