ENGLISH FOOTBALLERS

CANTERBURY MATCH CRIED “ OFF.”

Practicallv every hope that Canterbury footballers and thie football public generally had of seeing the touring English team in action in Christchurch vanished at Saturday evening’s meeting of the Canterbury Rugby League. Intimation was received from the secretary of the New Zealand League to the effect that Wednesday, July 15, had finally and unalterably been agreed upon as the day on which the Englishmen should meet Canterbury. The members of the league did not waste much time in discussing the position. The feeling of the meeting was that a Wednesday match would result in financial loss, and it was summarily decided to reply to the. New Zealand Council that July 15 was absolutely unsuitable. It transpired that the Hawke’s Bay League had communicated direct with the English managers, and had succeeded in obtaining •from them a definite assurance of a game at Napier on a Saturday (I July 18), hence Canterbury being assigned a Wednesday fixture. WELLINGTON’S REPRESENTATIVE TEAM. The touring team, who last week won the rubber in the test series with Australia, will play their first match in the Dominion on Saturday next. Their opponents will be Wellington, whose team will be :—Full-back, Strickland; three-quarters —W. Wilson, Jack Parker, G. Bradley, E. Whitley; five-eight, Murdoch; half, J. 1 V,or w-iii-jkal'A torvcarcts^—A. Donald - j son, J. Spencer, L. Campbell, F. Manning, J. Ashton, Lawler.
