SHE DOESN'T WANT MUCH
Five hundred thousand pounds is the record claim for damages for breach juf promise brought by Baroness Barbara Ursula Kalinoweki, of Wiesbaden, -against Mr .Mitchell J. Hurley, a millionaire railway contractor, of St. Louis. The Baroness details her claim as follows: - £3,000 expended in travelling through Europe and the United States in search of Mr Hurley after he had proposed marriage to Jeer m Paris on July 20, 1912 ; £5,000 trousseau, £2,000 for clothing, £5,000 hotel hills, £5,000 incidental expenses, £480,000 wounded feelings'. The baroness's etat«ment of iclaini reads like an account of a prolonged game of hide-and-seek. She alleges that tho proposal of marriage was made in the presence of her mother and brother. After giving an elaborate banquet to her friends she. returned to- Wiesbaden, where she was amazed to receive a Jotter from the. prospective bridegroom slating that bo was going to Rio Janeiro, and promising that his absence should be brief In. April of the following year, tiie plaintiff states, she received a telegram from tho defendant, date,! St. Louis, in which he asked her to meet him in London. She journeyed to London on Mac 1 1. only to find anuthe* - cablegram inatrudivig her to meet- him in New York. She landed in .Vow York and found a. telegram, from her .lover in which ho informed hei that he was ill and that it was “too hot in St. Louis.” Returning to New York she found Mr Hurley, who “kissed me and in many ways indicated his lave and affection.” After their meeting, however, Mr Hurley excused himself hy staling that lie was obliged to go to Washington and Chicago, but would return in 14 days. He never returned. The baroness declared that- owing to Ins behaviour she was prevented from marrying a man of her own class in Germany. “I have been held up,” she complains, “to scorn and ridicule a-s a jilted woman chasing a man over two Continents.” . Mr Hurley’s reply to the. suit is a subpama to the plaintiff to- “ show cause for action.”
