GIRL JEKYLL AND HYDE

A criminal charge brought by a young governess against Colonel Charles Hemy Gardiner, a retired officer of 71, was shown at Hove Police Court to bo enthely false. Tho girl, Kathleen O'Brien, had alleged that the colonel was Hie writer of several anonymous letters making serious imputations against her character. It was proved that the girl herself wrote the letters, and, as the magistrates said in disusing the case, the colonel left the court without t.he slightest stain on his character. The Mayor publicly shook hands with Colonel Gardiner, and everyone in court' congratulated hint on tho complete vindication of his honor. It was shown that Colonel -Gardiner had been the victim of a girl afflicted with a- form of mentaLderangement known as dual personality, in which she wrote the libellous letters to herself, probably without knowing she had done so. 'Hie girl has been sent to a home for reformative treatment.
