PLAYGROUNDS AND RESERVES.

TO THE EBIT R. Six, —I notice that the Reserve* Committee of tho City C<m. *sil cc.itemplate sending their superintendent Home in search, of knowledge in connection with playgrounds and tree-planting. Now, sir, do you consider this necessary. Surely the management -of playgrounds and thinning out of. plantations is not such a scientific matter as this leads one to believe. With regard to tho management of playgrounds, Mr Tannock could learn a lot in this respect from the various centres further norths—Christchurch. Wellington, and Auckland are far in advance of Dunedin in the matter of recreation grounds. Then, again, have w© not had recently lectures by reliable authorities on these matters, and has not Mr Tannock said that the Americans are the meet up-to-date people in th© way of playing fields, etc. ’ I understand that the superintendent has been in communication with authorities there on tliis subject. With, regard to tree-thinning, surely a good reliable work on forestry should give Mr Tannock all the information ho requires. Reading the various articles on recreation grounds, tree-planting, agriculture, etc., that Mr TannockTias been giving us of late, I should think that what he doesn’t know about these matters is not worth knowing. In any case. I should hardly think the expense of this journey is justified.—l am, etc., Citizen. July 6.
