Drunkenness.—A first offender was fined 5s or 24 hours’ imprisonment. Begging.—Edward Collins was charged with being an idle and disorderly person, in that he placed himself in King street for the purpose of begging alms. Ho pleaded not guilty.—Detective Hammerly said that accused stuck him up yesterday and asked him for 3d. said that he arrived from Balclutha four days ago, and had been on the spree, and that ni felt as if ho could do with a drink. On the way to the police station he attempted to escape, but witness caught; him. —Accused said that he came from Balclutha, and had been drinking heavily. Ho had spent all his money. He was ndVer out of work. •—His Worship advised accused to return to his work. He would bo convicted and ordered to come up for sentence any time within six months.
