DUNEDIN COMPETITIONS SOCIETY
A meeting of the Committee of the above society was held last night, Mr S. Solomon, K.C., presiding. The Literary Sub-committee submitted their report, as follows, which was adopted:—Essay (amateurs), 'The Educational Value of the Kinematogxaph'; original poem, any subject; original story; prepared speech, 'The British Flag;.'
The Elocution Sub-committee's recommendation of the following selections for this year's festival was adopted: Girls under 11, 'Flo's Letter'; boys under 11, 'The Boy and the Parrot' (J. H. Frere) ; girls 11 ajid under 14, ' The Lullaby of an Infant Chief (Sir W. Scott); boys 11 and under 14, ' Where There's a. Will There's a Way,' (J. G. Saxe); girls 14 and under 16, ' The Vandor's Teacher' (J. G. Whittier); boys 14 and under 16, ' The Knight's Toast' (anon.); ladies 16 and under 21, 'A Modern Fiancee'; gentlemen 16 and under 21, 'An Incident' iHarold Begbie); ladies, ' The Bottom Drawer * (anon.); gentlemen, 'Sheridan's Ride* (T. Adams). ■'■'.■ The Music Subcommittee submitted the following report, which was.adopted: That the prize-money for the choi.f contest be allotted as follows:—Ten starters, £IOO (£6O, £25 t £15); nine starters, £9O (£55, £23, £12); eight starters, £BO (£SO, £2O, £10); eeveri starters, £7O (£45, £l7, £8); so. start,, ere, £6C (£4O, £l4, £6); five starters, £SO (£35, £lO,-£5); four starters, £4O (£3O, £7, £3) ; three starters, £3O (£25, £5) ; two starters, £2O (£ls, £5) ; one starter, £lO. That the anthem be acr companied with piano; part song unaccompanied. That hymn be deleted, and that ah Operatic chorus be inserted in its place, to be accompanied. With regard to the fife and drum band contest, it was recommended that there be a test selection .and an own choice..
