MINING.

The secretary of the Success Company reports a return of 390z lldwt for 136 hours' work. This is the first return since the dredge was stopped on March 6 owing to a breakage. In the meantime the machinery has been thoroughly overhauled. The" Rise and Shine No. 1 dredge worked a cut of 500 ft last week. There was a sandy clay and sandetonfe bottom at a depth of about 46ft, with fair prospects in the wash.

The Rise and Shirio No. 2 dredge worked 15ft ahead last week. The cut was 250 ft wide, and from 40ft to 46ft deep, but there was very little wash on the clay and coal bottom.

The crosscut was in 32ffc in the Brilliant section, Ne"w Sylvia mine, Thames, - last week. The country was of a first-class ( description, and the reef is expected to be' at hand this week. In No. 1 level a strong body <jf ore was met with. This i 8 thought to be tho ore left by the old Tompanyj The extent of it cannot be determined until more work is done on it. It was of goad value. Driving south on No. 1 r«ef in No. 2' level had been started, and a distance of 6ft was advanced. Tht> reef was oft wide, and was heavily mineralised. Driving north on this reef will be commenced when the south drive is in a few more feet. Four stopes were going above the No. 3 level, and were producing a fair amount of ore. The drive on the reef south in the intermediate level was alvanced ■ 10ft,. and the reef was heavily mineralised. Colors of gold were occasionally seen._ No. 1 reef was 4ft wide, and was carrying nice minerals. In No. 5 level the reef had been opened up south of the main crosscut. The reef was 6ft wide, with no hanging wall showing.
