DRAUGHTS

\ meeting was held in the U.A.O.D. Hall, Anderson Bay, last night, to discuss the desirability of forming a draughts club in the district. Mr Fairbairn was voted to the chair. ~ , The Chairman stated that the idea ei starting a draught* club had been mooted, and knowing that there was a good deal ot talent in the neighborhood, he offered no apology for convening the meeting. After a discussion as to whether the club-should be a chess and draughts club or a draughts club only, the latter course was adopted. Mr Hilliker (who was present by invitation) stated that clubs combining the two games had. not, in lus experience, been a complete success, owing largely to the initial cost of procuring the necessary material, and counselled the club, for the first year of their existence at least, to stick to draughts, leaving the question of combining the two games until tlie club was more firmly founded. It was decided to fix the annual subscription at 5s for adults and 2& 6d for youths, and to meet on Thursday nights. It was unfortunate that the meeting clashed with other meetings in the neighborhood. In consequence of the number absent who had promised support, the electidh of office-bearers was deferred till next meeting, Mr N. W. Mac Lean being appointed hon. secretary pro tem. Mr Hilliker stated that he and others would assist the club as much as they could, by giving exhibitions of play, simultaneous or otherwise. Word was also received that Mr Boreham was prepared to play a simultaneous game, end games, or problem-solving, for the benefit of the members. A vote of thanks was accorded to Mr Hilliker for his assistance. The business over, Mr Hilliker played a large number of games simultaneously, winning all of them with the exception of one, wnich was drawnJudging by the enthusiasm shown and the assistance tendered (monetary and otherwise), the prospects of the -i'-'Wson Bay club are indeed bright..
