IN THE BACK BLOCKS

The Hon. W. Fraser, Minister of Public ' Worts, reached Ponsraroa (which is 36 miles from Pahiahia)" last night. The Minister is making a tour of the back blocks in accordance with a promise he made when he visited the district last year in connection v>ith the railway on the East Coast. Mr Fraser had a hearty reception, and was banqueted by the Masterton-Waj-pukurau Railway League. The Minister's gTeat interest in the back b]oc*ks was eulogteed by the speakers. Mr Fraeer referred to the necessity for good metalled roads from the back bio*; to' the railways, and indicated that it was the "intention of the Government to make provision on the Estimates for metalling roads leading to Dannevirke, Eketahuna, and Pahiatua. New Zealand securities, he said, were now in good request by investors, and he contrasted this with the short-dated loans of the previous Government which were taken up by speculators. He commended the Prime Minister's proposal fov raising a special loan for reading the back blocks, which he thought would be a good thing. If a loan were raised there would be plenty of applications for the money.
