THE MATARAE CAMP. ... ■»■■ [From Odr Own Reporter.] MATABAE. April 30. This morning the work of demolition began at the camp _ at ■ Matarae. From 5.30 a.m. troop- trains wero running, each... baking its toll from the Mounted Rifles Brigade, and by midday the lines of the mounted men were deserted. The Otago Hussars left about midday. They will ride to Macraes, and leave Dunback to-mor-row at 12.30 p.m. for their homes. Altogether about 40 officers, 822 men, and 828 horses left to-day. The In : fautry, the Batteries, and the Signallers will leave on Saturday, when special trains will run from 5.30 a.m. One hundred and twenty-seven officers, 3,186 men, and 166 horses (approximately) will leave on Saturday. The casual camp will begin on Monday. It is estimated that of the Mounted Brigade there will be 163 men and 98 horses, and that the total number of men in camp will be 616. Last night 12-year long-service medals were presented to Captain Jenkins, Lieutenants Mitchell, Smith, and Greer, and Quartermaster-scrct'.-mU Trotter and Cunningham. The latter was also presented with a barometer by the non-commissioned officers of his mess in recognition of the fact that he has put in 21 years.
