SWIMMING

100 YARDS NEW SOUTH WALES CHAMPIONSHIP.; At the swimming carnival at Sydney on Saturday the 100 Yards Professional Championship of New South Wales was won by Wickham; who beat Kaufman by four yards. Time, 60 4-Ssec.

CARNIVAL AT ST. CLAIR. The opening carnival of the Otago Amateur Swimming Club, held at St. Clair on Saturday afternoon under N.Z.S.A. rules, attracted a big crowd, who were JiberaJlv rewarded by a capital'aiternoon's sport. "For once in a way the club were favored by comparatively fine weather. The water was smooth, but a chilly wind, which made itself rather severely felt in the concluding stages, rendered matters somewhat unpleasant for the competitors, and in a lesser degree for the spectators. The programme contained 12 events, several of which were productive of close finishes. In the Back Handicap, of 50yds, there were a couple of possible cases of unintentional blocking, but the official's rightly did not consider them in the light of infringements. The plate-diving competition evoked, as ueual, endless amusement, and the spectators accorded the two sole competitors rounds of applause as they reappeared. The Ladies' Race was cancelled owing to the cold weather. The meeting was admirably managed, and those who were responsible for its management earned the support the carnival received.
